What is Chetumal like in Mexico?

I have been to Playa Del Carmen but Chetumal looks bigger on a map. Is Chetumal anything like Playa? Are they friendly to p�lidos like I found in Playa? The youth seem to stick together regardless of where I seem to go but I worry about my parents generation and we like seeing Mexico not just hang out in a resort compound.
